Turkish officials say there is a potential breakthrough in efforts to release Ukrainian grain to world markets as global food prices soar amid Russia’s war with Ukraine. Turkey's defense minister, Hulusi Akar, said an agreement is likely to be announced soon following four-way talks Wednesday among Russian, Ukrainian, United Nations, and Turkish officials in Istanbul.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, while welcoming the process, also cautioned Wednesday that this is not yet a done deal.

"More technical work will now be needed to materialize today's progress. But the momentum is clear,” he said.

Trust has been a key stumbling block in months of diplomatic efforts to reach a deal. Kyiv has said it fears that if it de-mines its ports to allow cargo ships to export grain, Russian forces will use that move to their advantage and attack. The grain has been stuck amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

China’s wheat for the summer harvest rose slightly from the previous year, the country’s statistics bureau said on Thursday, following concerns after heavy autumn rains delayed planting for the winter harvest.

Summer wheat crop output in the world’s top grower of the grain rose 1.0% to 135.76 million tonnes in 2022, the National Statistics Bureau said, while wheat planting acreage this summer increased 0.2% from last year.

Overall summer grain output also rose 1.0% from the previous year to 147.39 million tonnes, and summer planting acreage saw yearly gains of 0.3%.

Beijing has refocused on grain security, a top policy priority that has become increasingly prominent, since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020. Its prominence was heightened after the start of the war in grain-producing powerhouse Ukraine in late February.

Prices of wheat harvested in China also rose to their highest levels on record last month despite stable demand, pushed up by surging farming costs, tight stocks and concerns that heavy rains last year would lead to a smaller crop.

France , In its first forecast of the wheat harvest season, France’s farm office reported soft wheat production will be 32.895 million tonnes, down 7.2% from last year.

Egypt's General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), the country's ’s grains buyer, announced on Sunday a tender for an unspecified amount of wheat from five imports origins, namely the US, Canada, Australia, Argentina, and Brazil.

The deadline for offers is Tuesday, 19 July, with tender envelopes to be opened on the same day, GASC added in a statement.

Traders are allowed to submit offers on cost and freight (C&F) basis for payment using 180-day letters of credit, according to the GASC.

The GASC said shipping will be from 16-30 September, 1-15 October, and 1-15 November

Demand for U.S. soybeans is falling as bumper crops in South America eat into U.S. export prospects, the U.S. government said on Tuesday.

The large harvests in Brazil and Argentina also will cause U.S. processors to cut back on their expected pace of soy crushing as overseas buyers look for alternative suppliers to meet their soymeal needs, the U.S. Agriculture Department said on Tuesday.

The bearish demand view pushed soybean futures to session lows, with the most-active contract Sv1 trading down 4.3% around midday. Lower crop prices could help ease food costs that have been fueling inflation.
